Nominations are now open for the 2025 Waitaha Canterbury International Student Awards, which recognise the outstanding contributions international students make to the social, cultural and economic life of 艑tautahi Christchurch.
Open to students from all education providers, the awards shine a light on the diverse ways international students enrich our communities, create connections, and help shape a vibrant, globally minded city.
Christchurch is proud to be a welcoming place where international students can thrive 鈥 both in their studies and their lives beyond the classroom. As they pursue world-class education, they also bring new perspectives, foster cross-cultural understanding, and strengthen our ties with the world.
Nominations close 5pm on Wednesday 9 July 2025. Shortlisted students will be invited to attend the mayor鈥檚 awards on Thursday 7 August at Ng膩 Hau E Wh膩 National Marae.

2025 award categories:听
Each of the following categories will recognise three awardees, one from secondary schools, one from English Language Providers, Private Tertiary Establishments and Te P奴kenga, and one from Christchurch universities.
Community Engagement Award听
Honours an international student who has actively engaged with the local community through volunteer work, service projects, or other initiatives.
Leader and Mentor Award听
Celebrates an international student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and has effectively in铿倁enced positive change within their educational institution and the community.
Cultural Ambassador Award听
Celebrates an international student who has actively promoted cultural exchange and understanding between diverse communities within 艑tautahi Christchurch.
Supreme Award 鈥 Mayor鈥檚 International Student of the Year Award听
In addition to the above, this award recognises an exceptional international student who has demonstrated outstanding achievements, leadership qualities, and a signi铿乧ant positive impact on 艑tautahi Christchurch, Waitaha Canterbury.听
