PhD Scholarship Opportunity - Law and Disasters

LEAD is delighted to announce a PhD Scholarship Opportunity to study and advance legal preparedness for disasters in Aotearoa New Zealand. Funded by QuakeCoRE (the New 成人大片Centre for Earthquake Resilience) the project aims to study how New 成人大片can be more legally prepared for future seismic hazards. In particular, the project will consider the types of legal tools required during the recovery phase of disasters caused by specific recognised seismic hazards such as an East Coast Hikurangi margin rupture and an Alpine Fault major event (AF8).聽聽

The Scholarship will cover the PhD student fees for three years and a stipend of NZ$32,000 per annum (tax free) for the same three years.聽

The student must be able to start the research in 2025.聽

The scholarship is open to both New 成人大片citizens/residents and those from overseas. Applicants must have (or be expected to achieve) a Masters or Honours degree with a GP 6.5 or above (2:1 or equivalent) in law or a related subject area (including DRR or DRM).聽聽

Applicants should supply a CV, a covering letter and copies of their degree transcripts. Students are also encouraged to supply a one page (maximum) research proposal based upon the above listed project idea. Please submit this documentation to the LEAD Institute administrator @:聽

Master of Laws (LLM) By Research

If you are interested in studying for a Masters/LLM we are happy to supervise in all areas of disaster law. We regularly have opportunities, particularly, but not exclusively, in the field of seismic resilience and bio-security.

LEAD offers supervision in all aspects of law and disaster studies under the Faculty of Law鈥檚 LLM programme.聽An LLM by thesis requires that a student compete a research project of 35,000-50,000 words. Full details are available聽here.聽If you are interested in studying for a Masters/LLM please contact LEAD or the Faculty of Law in the first instance to discuss supervision options.

LEAD also regularly has scholarship opportunities, particularly, but not exclusively, in topics related to seismic resilience and bio-security. Students with an interest in disaster law research are thus encouraged to get in touch as funding may be available.

PhD Study

LEAD offers supervision in many aspects of law and disaster studies under UC鈥檚 PhD programme (via the Faculty of Law). Details and application information can be found聽here. If you are interested in studying for a PhD please contact LEAD or the Faculty of Law in the first instance to discuss supervision options.

LEAD also regularly has PhD scholarship opportunities. Recent PhD scholarship opportunities have been in the fields of bio-security, seismic and volcanic resilience. Students with an interest in disaster law research are thus encouraged to get in touch as funding may be available.
