How to stay safe this winter

Welcome to Semester two. Campus is busy which means there鈥檚 a lot of people around and it鈥檚 easy to become complacent when it comes to campus safety.听

HOW TO APPLY

听It鈥檚 important to be aware of winter hazards on campus and knowing how and where to report them.听听

  • Allow time to fully defrost your car. This is a reminder that it鈥檚 illegal to peer through a defrosted section the size of your hand.听

  • Take care on painted surfaces and in areas that don鈥檛 get much sun during winter when you are walking, scootering or skateboarding.鈥赌

  • Consider your footwear, use handrails when you can and if it鈥檚 safer, opt to walk on the grass during frosty mornings.鈥赌

Cycle safety听

  • Always wear a helmet

  • Be seen on your bike with lights and by wearing high vis听

  • Lock up your bike - UC Security is taking a number of anti-theft measures, including offering D Locks to UC staff and students at cost price (currently $45). Go to the security office to take advantage of this offer.听听

Noticing your surroundings听

It鈥檚 easy to keep scrolling on your phone while you鈥檙e on the move, so make sure you notice where you鈥檙e going, or who might be coming towards you. Watch out for crowds in鈥痓etween lectures and look up when you鈥檙e crossing roads.鈥

Winter is a great time to log into鈥痑nd check your emergency details are still correct and up to date.听听

Help Point Towers鈥痮n campus听

There are 11 help point towers on campus, which are designed to provide information any time (push black button) and immediate assistance in an emergency (push red button).听

UC Security staff are on campus 24/7, therefore someone will always be there to help you in an emergency at UC. Be prepared by saving UC Security鈥檚 number into your phone.听

Emergency Procedures 鈥 Lecture theatres 鈥

All departments have an Emergency Procedures flip chart outlining what to do in different types of emergencies. The flip charts are on display throughout the University and can be found in all lecture theatres. A PDF version of each page can be found on the鈥UC website Emergency Procedures page.鈥赌

Fire safety听

Check that all furniture, clothing, and belongings are at least one metre from an electric heater.听听

Reporting an incident on Assura听

If you get injured or see something unsafe while on campus, please report it through UC鈥檚 health and safety system, . Reporting through Assura will increase our visibility of hazards, so we can correct any issues and make UC safer. Health and safety is鈥痚veryone鈥檚鈥痳esponsibility, and by working together we can protect the community.
